Scientific Project Director

Mirella Serlorenzi
Mirella has been the creator and scientific head of the SITAR Project since 2007. She graduated and specialised in Medieval Archaeology at Sapienza University of Rome and trained in the large urban excavations in Rome at the Crypta Balbi and the Palatine.
From 2000 to 2006 she was Archaeologist Director at the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici in Ostia and from 2006 to 2012 Archaeologist Director and Coordinator at the Soprintendenza Speciale Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio in Rome. From 2013 to 2015 she has been Director of the Museum of the High Middle Ages and since June 2015 Director of the National Roman Museum – Crypta Balbi; since 2017 she has been Director of the National Roman Museum – Palazzo Massimo.
She is scientific director and coordinator of important archaeological excavations in the Esquiline area, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and Piazza Dante and in other areas of the historic center of Rome, in particular the excavation of the Athenaeum and the archaeological complex in Largo S. Susanna, at the former site of the Geological Institute.
To her credit she has numerous scientific publications and she has taken part in numerous European projects, including ARIADNE, the project “Atlas des techniques de construction dans le monde romain” of the Ecole Normale Supérieure and AREA – Archives of European Archaeology. She has also joined ministerial commissions, appointed by the Minister, for the creation of the Archaeological Information System of Italian cities and their territories and for Preventive Archaeology, and in the MiBACT technical table on Open data.
From 2000 to 2006 she was Archaeologist Director at the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici in Ostia and from 2006 to 2012 Archaeologist Director and Coordinator at the Soprintendenza Speciale Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio in Rome. Giorgia Leoni
Giorgia is an Archaeologist graduated in 2002 and specialized (2006) in Topography of Rome and Ancient Italy at Sapienza – University of Rome. She collaborated from 2002 to 2007 with the Laboratory of Experimental Archaeological Cartography “Forma Italiae” working on the GIS project for the “Tabula Imperii Romani” and on the implementation of the GIS of the Census Project for the Archaeological Cartography of Italy within the P.O.N. “Security for the Development of Southern Italy”.
From 2005 to 2007 she joined the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici dell’Umbria for the direction and organisation of the inventorying and cataloguing campaign of archaeological heritage.

Federica Lamonaca
Federica is an archaeologist graduated in 2006 in Ancient Urban Planning and specialized (2010) in Topography of Rome and Ancient Italy at Sapienza – University of Rome. She collaborated with the Laboratory of Experimental Archaeological Cartography “Forma Italiae” and worked on the implementation of the GIS of the Census Project for the Archaeological Cartography of Italy within the P.O.N. “Security for the Development of Southern Italy”.
She joined as a student the first course (2018-2020) of the Heritage School of the Foundation School of Cultural Heritage and Activities, within which she is deepening the issues related to museum accessibility and cultural heritage. She obtained the First level master’s degree (2020) in – B.E.S. (Special Educational Needs – Personalised Learning) at the “Icotea” University Institute.

Stefania Picciola
Stefania is an archaeologist graduated in 1995 at the Sapienza University of Rome in Methodology of Archaeological Research with a thesis on the Crypta Balbi. She was a Research Fellow (2002-2005) at the University of Siena with a project on the stratigraphy of the Crypta Balbi elevations and related 3D models.
She has supervised the graphic and digital documentation and surveys processes in numerous archaeological excavation campaigns, mostly focusing on Crypta Balbi, and she is still responsible for the graphic documentation of the excavation of Gortina (Crete). She has been a contract lecturer at the University of Siena (1996-2008) and since 2005 at the University of Roma Tre with Laboratories for Surveying and Information Technology applied to Cultural Heritage.
Within the SITAR Project she is in charge of the collection, selection and acquisition in digital format of the archival documentation; georeferencing and digitisation of the graphic documentation; drafting of the Origin of Information (OI) and Archaeological Parts; normalisation of the Thesaurus and/or ontologies, bibliographic, historical and archival research. Stefania Valentini
Stefania is an archaeologist graduated in 2015 at the University of Roma Tre.
Within the SITAR Project she is in charge of the collection, selection and acquisition in digital format of the archival documentation; georeferencing and digitisation of the graphic documentation; drafting of the Origin of Information (OI) and Archaeological Parts.

Carlo Cifarelli
Carlo is a Computer Science Engineer with a degree in Computer Science and Digital Communication at the University of Bari (2008).
From 2008 to 2013 he worked as IT consultant in the CRM area for CONSIP, Banca D’Italia, Selex SeMa and Telecom Italia.
Since 2013 he collaborated with the communication company Nwdesigns for the development of commercial web applications, e-commerce and management.
Since 2014 he has been working as Software Engineer for YourPersonal LtD. on the YourPersonalJames.com project.
In 2017 he supported the Department of Computer Engineering, Automation and Management of the Sapienza University of Rome, during the Assessment activities of the IT platform underlying the Electronic Meal Voucher service for the company Qui!Group.
In 2018 he collaborated with Ced Digital & Servizi (Caltagirone Editore) for Google Digital News Innovation Fund.
In 2019 he participates in the installation NEURAL MIRROR made for Fondazione Carla Fendi on the occasion of the Festival Dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, within this project he designed and created numerical control printers that write with ballpoint pens on rolls of paper mimicking human writing.
Since 2020 he has been working on the SITAR project as a Software Engineer and Systems Engineer.

Riccardo Montalbano
Riccardo is an archaeologist with specialism in Ancient Topogragraphy, he studied at the University of Rome, Southampton, Venice and Tübingen. His research interests are wide, encompassing GIS applications, landscape archaeology and ancient urbanism. The main focus is the urban history of the City of Rome, with a special attention for the infrastructural networks and for the cultural, political, social and ideological significance of the components of the ancient townscape.
Aware of the importance of the new technologies applied to the study of ancient landscape and the conservation of the Cultural Heritage, he continued his postgraduate training in United Kingdom, where he perfected his skills in GIS and Archaeological Computing. He then consolidated technical knowledge by attending certified GIS courses (ESRI, TerreLogiche).
As a GIS specialist, he is involved in several projects in Italy and in Turkey and he is currently Adjunct Professor at the International Telematic University Uninettuno (courses of Ancient Landsape Analysis and GIS and Technical Analysis of ancient buildings) and GIS expert/senior topographer at the Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma. Ascanio D’Andrea
Ascanio has wide-ranging expertise in data management for cultural heritage. He has worked for more than twenty years for archaeological and conservation projects all around Italy and the Mediterranean area and has gained considerable experience of a wide range of digital tools for documentation and heritage management based on the specific needs of heritage places.
He is Data Manager of the Herculaneum Conservation Project, with responsibility for creating digital tools to address conservation needs, cross disciplinary coordination and meeting user needs. He was part of Getty Conservation Institute’s Bulla Regia Conservation Project (Tunisia), creating the new site plan and GIS of the in situ mosaics. He is an international capacity building provider on World Heritage impact assessments and data management procesess for Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage, ICCROM and Getty Conservation Institute.
Within the SITAR Project, he is in charge of data maintenance and coordination of system implementation activities and the development of new functionalities, and collaborates in the identification of development strategies for the system and new application modules.

Andrea De Tommasi
Andrea is a GIS expert and member of the working group of the SITAR Project since its inception.
He was responsible for the development of the logical architecture and the various applications of the system, taking care of the integration with other knowledge management systems and the connection to the GARR-X network.
